Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have come under fire for their recent call to action urging Americans to register to vote ahead of the US presidential election. Through their Archewell Foundation, the couple encouraged people to get involved in the voting process, calling it “a fundamental way to influence the fate of our communities.”
Their statement, released on National Voter Registration Day, emphasized the importance of civic engagement. The couple said, “Voting is not just a right; it’s a fundamental way to influence the fate of our communities.” They further highlighted their foundation’s efforts, saying their team participated in a letter-writing campaign to encourage voter registration.
Despite not publicly endorsing any candidate, their message has sparked criticism. Greg Swenson, Chairman of the Republican movement in the UK, accused the couple of promoting a political bias. He said, “By encouraging people to vote, they are essentially ballot harvesting for Kamala Harris.” Swenson suggested that the couple’s actions, though subtle, indicate a clear preference for the Democratic ticket.
While Harry and Meghan did not endorse a specific candidate, other celebrities have made their political preferences known. Taylor Swift publicly backed Kamala Harris, while Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas also voiced support for the Harris-Walz ticket over Donald Trump.
Adding to the tension, Trump’s son, Eric Trump, previously criticized the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, calling them “spoiled apples” during an interview with GB News earlier this year. The couple has frequently faced scrutiny for their political involvement, particularly in the US, where the royal family traditionally remains politically neutral.
As the debate continues, Harry and Meghan’s call for voter participation has sparked widespread discussion. While they urge the importance of civic engagement without endorsing a candidate, critics argue that their involvement still carries political undertones.
