In a landmark achievement, the remote Gurez Valley in Bandipora has been successfully connected to the electricity grid for the first time, marking a historic moment facilitated by the collaborative efforts of the Power Development Department (PDD) and the District Administration.
The announcement of this groundbreaking development was made by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who expressed his joy and emphasized the significance of this occasion in the region’s history.
The ambitious project involved laying approximately 180 kilometres of 150 mmsq conductor, installing 1950 ST Poles, and implementing 4 km of underground cabling. Notably, the infrastructure spans challenging terrain, including the Razdhan Pass at a height of 12,672 ft above sea level, known for its hostile weather conditions. The successful test check underscores the government’s commitment to extending essential services to far-flung areas.
Dr. Owais Ahmad, acknowledging the resilience of the Gurez Valley residents, extended congratulations for their patience and perseverance throughout the challenging process. He expressed optimism about the positive impact of electricity on various aspects of daily life, including education, healthcare, and economic activities.
Local residents conveyed their overwhelming joy and gratitude to the Hon’ble LG, District Administration, and PDD for the successful completion of this transformative project. They anticipate that a dedicated power supply will contribute significantly to progress in tourism-related and other economic activities.
Dr Owais informed that the district team, including the STD division, diligently adhered to strict timelines, with the 60 KM 33 KV transmission line successfully undergoing a trial on Sunday. The initial phase is expected to benefit 1500 consumers, with plans to connect the remaining villages in subsequent phases.
Highlighting decades of challenges faced by Gurez Valley residents due to the absence of a consistent power supply, Dr Owais emphasized that grid connectivity represents not only access to power but empowerment for local communities, fostering economic growth and enhancing overall quality of life.
As the lights illuminate Gurez Valley for the first time, it symbolizes not just the arrival of electricity but the dawn of a new era for the residents, full of possibilities and opportunities.
