Gone Too Soon: Former Sri Lanka Under-19 Captain Dhammika Niroshana Shot Dead

Former Sri Lanka Under-19 captain Dhammika Niroshana tragically passed away at the age of 41 after being shot by an unidentified assailant outside his residence in Ambalangoda, Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan authorities have initiated an investigation to apprehend the perpetrator responsible for this violent act.

Niroshana, survived by his wife and two children, had a promising cricket career before retiring from all forms of the game in 2004. Known for his skills as a fast-bowler and occasional batting performances, Niroshana debuted for Sri Lanka’s Under-19 team in 2000 and briefly captained the side in 2002.

Although he didn’t make it to the senior national team, Niroshana played alongside future Sri Lankan cricket stars such as Angelo Mathews, Upul Tharanga, and Farveez Maharoof at the Under-19 level and in Sri Lanka’s domestic cricket. He represented teams like Chilaw Marians CC and Galle CC during his career.

According to Sri Lanka Police Media spokesperson Nihal Thalduwa, investigations are focusing on apprehending the suspect involved in the shooting, which appears to be linked to gang rivalry.

Niroshana’s leadership was notable during the 2002 Under-19 World Cup held in New Zealand, where he led Sri Lanka to the Super League stage with a solitary victory. His team included future international stars, and Niroshana himself demonstrated his talent with seven wickets in the tournament.

His tragic death has shocked the cricket community, mourning the loss of a promising talent who contributed significantly during his youth cricket career in Sri Lanka.
