Amid the growing number of Covid-19 cases, the Goa government on Wednesday announced the imposition of lockdown in the state from Thursday evening.

Full lockdown will be imposed in Goa from the evening of April 29 till the morning of May 3, announced Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, while addressing a press conference. The CM said that only essential services and industrial activities will be allowed to operate during the lockdown. Public transport will not ply during the period.

“Lockdown announced in the state from 29 April, 7 pm to the morning of 3 May. Essential services and industrial activities are allowed, public transport will remain shut,” CM Sawant said.

According to his address, casinos, hotels and pubs will remain closed during the lockdown while borders will stay open for essential service transportation.

Weekly markets will also not be allowed during the lockdown.

Sawant said that casual labourers need not worry as the lockdown will be lifted on Monday morning and business activities will resume.

The CM also appealed to people to take necessary precautions against coronavirus and take medicines in case of Covid-19 symptoms.

The announcement came a day after Goa reported 2,110 new Covid-19 cases along with 31 fatalities. The state now has a total of 81,908 coronavirus cases while the death toll is at 1,086.

Recoveries have surged to 64,231 but there are still a total of 16,591 active cases in the coastal state.

Goa has so far carried out 6,32,131 Covid-19 tests.
