Dominique Pelicot, a 71-year-old French man, has admitted to all charges against him in a harrowing case that has shocked many. During his first testimony since the trial commenced on September 2, Pelicot confessed to drugging his wife, Gisele Pelicot, and orchestrating the rape of over 51 men while she was unconscious. The abuse occurred over a span of nearly a decade, from 2011 to 2020.
In testimony of French man, Pelicot, a retired estate agent, reflected on his actions and claimed that he had not always been “perverted.” He expressed regret, stating, “I loved her well for 40 years and badly for 10,” referring to the period during which the abuse occurred. Pelicot attributed his descent into depravity to a “selfish moment” influenced by a male nurse he met online in 2010.
The nurse introduced Pelicot to the practice of drugging his wife with Temesta, an anti-anxiety medication, and provided him with photos of drugged women. This moment, Pelicot said, marked the beginning of his moral decline. He subsequently utilized an internet forum called “Without Her Knowledge” to invite strangers to his home in the French village of Mazan to commit the assaults.
The accused, Pelicot, detailed how he would mix sedatives or anti-anxiety medications into his wife’s evening meals to render her unconscious. He also imposed specific rules for the men he invited to rape her. The group of men involved included a civil servant, a prison guard, a former police officer, a firefighter, a journalist, and nurses, with ages ranging from 24 to 74.
Gisele Pelicot, who waived her right to anonymity, has sought to bring more attention to the case through the media. The trial has drawn significant public and media interest due to the disturbing nature of the crimes and the high-profile nature of the defendants.
