People prefer to communicate via messages in the modern era, and emoticons have replaced words like “text lingo”! Emojis are so widely used because everyone believes they are an excellent way to express emotions more effectively. You may not be aware of this, but there are differences in how we use and perceive emojis. In honour of World Emoji Day, let’s find out what specific emojis actually signify and how various people interpret them.
In order to create a report on how various emojis are interpreted by different people, “Slack” teamed up with their client Duolingo and polled a total of 9,400 hybrid workers in North America, Asia, and Europe. And it has been discovered that a LOT of emojis are perceived significantly differently after sampling the Indian audience!
EYES EMOJI
This emoji, often known as the “I’m watching you” or “rolling eye” emoji, is probably used rather frequently in your WhatsApp conversations. You might be surprised to learn that, according to 46% of Indians who responded to the poll, the phrase implies “I see you,” while 27% say it means “I’m looking at this.”
‘BUNDLE OF CASH’ EMOJI
You might be surprised to learn that despite this emoji’s seeming simplicity, it is one of the most often used. According to the report, 41% of Indians interpret it to mean “influx of money,” while 40% interpret it to indicate “hoping for money.” It’s interesting to note that 14% of respondents used it to represent a “loss of money,” which seems unlikely but is what it is.
WINK EMOJI
How would you emojitize the phrase “Akhiyon se goli maare” in a flirty manner? Simple! Use the emoji wink. However, not many people hold such view. Imagine that 44% of people think this is being said as a joke. Surprisingly, only 28% of people flirt with others using it. The remaining 26% see it as an emoji for their inside jokes.
EGGPLANT EMOJI
Unquestionably the most controversial one thus far! This emoji has a lot of people’s dirty private jokes attached to it, so it’s safe to conclude that most people have objectified the poor fruit in some way. But hold on, fortunately, the majority of Indians who participated in the survey do not believe so. Nearly 36% of respondents from India believe that the eggplant is simply a literal representation of the fruit. So, instead of calling HR right away if your co-worker sends you this emoji, wait a little bit! However, according to the poll, 28% of Indians use the eggplant emoji to indicate that they are “feeling flirtatious,” and shockingly, 16% use it to indicate that they are “feeling hungry.”
