love experimenting with new foods – in fact my food choices once left me thoroughly pickled on Poetta beach in Cagliari, Sardinia, but that’s another story. Yet there some bizarre, almost scary foods that even I would balk at, so if you are of a squeamish disposition, stop right here. The matter ahead could read like a culinary horror story. And, if you think the list of the unusual and creepy foods ends with the shark curry, you are mistaken. Here we hold your hands and take you to a less-explored wild world of food. When it comes to food, every culture has its own preferences. What makes a food weird, however, goes beyond what would be considered culture shock. These dishes push the boundaries of normalcy, yet are considered to be quite tasty and healthy.

Tuna Eyeballs
Believe it or not, they’re a delicacy in Japan! Fried, stewed or steamed these tennis ball sized eyeballs, accompanied by soy sauce, rice vinegar and lemon slices, are served as appetizers in Izakayas (‘stay-drink-place’) pubs.

Puffer Fish (Fugu)
This is another Japanese delicacy is mild, clean looking fish, served deep fried oras thinly sliced sashimi prepped by special training given to Fugu chefs, can actually turn out to be a deadly killer. These fish contains Tetrodotoxin, more toxic than cyanide, is carefully removed from fish skin.

Fried Spider
In Cambodia there is a city called Spider Town, so named because it is so infested with spiders (Tarantulas) that locals started eating them. Breaded and deep fried, served with rice or noodles and the meat to have a taste that is a cross between chicken and cod.

The Dancing Squid Bowl (Katsu ika odori-don)
They say the headless squid served atop a bowl of rice or noodles, accompanied by salmon eggs and other toppings, is actually dead and only appears to be dancing because of muscle contraction though the sodium in the soy sauce poured over it.

Termites for Tea
There is a tribe in South India – Irulas– who positively relish these ‘flying’ ants. They block the wind to fool termites , then they dig a hole in mould place a pot balancing on sticks & lit a lamp, sprinkles a small benon on mould the ants heading straight to it & suddenly it grows alive & gets full the termites are transferred into sacks.Later they separate their wings from chaff & relishes roasted protein rich termites.
