A shooting at a migrant camp near Dunkirk, France, has left five people dead. Following the attack, a 22-year-old man claimed responsibility and turned himself in at the Ghyvelde police station at 5 pm on Saturday.

The shooting occurred at Loon-Plage, where four victims—two security guards and two migrants—were killed. Additionally, the suspect admitted to an earlier shooting in Wormhout. Dunkirk’s Mayor, Patrice Vergriete, confirmed that authorities found a weapon in the suspect’s car. However, the motive for the attack remains unclear.

Vergriete called the event a “tragedy” and said, “an individual coldly murdered several people.” Later, Xavier Bertrand, head of the regional assembly, confirmed on X that five people had died in the “tragic event.”

Investigation Ongoing

Meanwhile, authorities continue to investigate the shooting. Emergency services remain stationed at the migrant camp. Loon-Plage is home to several temporary settlements for migrants, located near Calais and the Strait of Dover.

According to the charity Care4Calais, many of the migrants are “Kurdish or Afghan,” including families with young children. These refugees have been living in the area for years, hoping to reach the UK.
