According to unofficial information, air defence systems were activated after hearing five explosions in the early hours of Wednesday in the city of Kherson, according to Russian media.

When Russian forces began their invasion of Ukraine in February, Kherson, the administrative hub of the larger Kherson region, was one of the first cities to fall.

Ivan Fedorov, the exiled mayor of Melitopol, a city in the southern Zaporizhzhia region that is under Russian control, said earlier on Wednesday that the city had seen a significant explosion.

An explosion exploded close to the city’s main market, according to RIA, which cited local Russian-installed police. RIA reported that there were no casualties.

Reuters was unable to verify the information immediately.
