West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced that Bengal minister and party leader Firhad Hakim will become the new mayor of Kolkata.

Trinamool state president Subrata Bakshi nominated Hakim as the leader of the newly-elected councillors of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

Hakim said: “We will work by following the path shown by Mamata Banerjee. I will fulfill the responsibility she has given me with dignity.”

Lok Sabha MP Mala Roy was named the chairperson of the civic body. MLA Atin Ghosh is the deputy mayor of KMC.

Mamata congratulated all the 134 winning councillors of the party. “I congratulate all the 134 councillors. This victory is not just the victory of the Trinamool Congress. I formed Trinamool Congress with the sole purpose of serving the people. I have created the team with an ideal. People have put their trust in us even despite several allegations. That price must be paid.”

She also announced the names of 13 mayors who became members of the council. The Trinamool chief also announced the names of the chairmen of 16 boroughs.

Mamata said: “Out of our 16 boroughs, 10 borough committee chairpersons are women. It is a manifestation of women’s empowerment. Do a good job. Mala Roy has become the chairperson. The issues have to be rectified.”

Mamata issued a warning to the newly-elected councillors. “Gradually we will see the performance. We will review the work. Those who do good work will get better. The team will decide for those who do not perform well.”
