The six-member wolf pack that had terrorized the Mahsi region of Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, has been completely eliminated. Villagers in Tamachpur village killed the last wolf on Saturday while it was attempting to hunt a goat. Following the incident, the local forest department recovered the wolf’s body and will conduct a postmortem before taking further action.
Bahraich District Forest Officer Ajit Singh stated, “For many days, our teams have been trying to capture this last wolf. Upon receiving reports of an animal carcass in the village, we promptly went to investigate and found a dead wolf with signs of wounds. It’s likely that villagers or others were responsible for its death. We will conduct an investigation to clarify the circumstances.”
This pack of wolves had caused significant distress in the area over recent months, attacking numerous villages within the Mahsi tehsil. The Uttar Pradesh Forest Department had launched “Operation Bhediya” to track and capture the wolves responsible for assaults on residents across 25-30 villages in the Bahraich Forest Division. The fifth wolf was captured on September 10.
To locate the final wolf, the department set up snap cameras in likely wolf habitats, including three cameras around six caves in Sikandarpur village, which locals identified as the wolves’ dens.
Tragically, the attacks attributed to the wolves have resulted in nine fatalities and over 40 injuries in various Bahraich villages.
