My thoughts about commonality in female characters triggered while watching the opulent web series Heeramandi conceptualised by Sanjay Leela Bhansali . Sailing through the mesmerising flow of events in series, I encapsulated the idea how women, the finest of nature’s creation, are similar in every aspect, every move, every characteristic.
The foremost ,the fundamental aspect of every woman’s being, their yearning for dignity. Love, understanding and security from male counterparts therefore play crucial role in her quest for dignity. Additionally her ability to give birth and nurture life represent her significant strength, underscoring her vital role in continuity and growth of society.
Endowed with the natural gift of motherhood every woman relates to other’s experience. While this understanding may get clouded by worldly factors but remain deeply rooted in psyche of women. The director skillfully explorers this aspect , portraying successfully seemingly intricate relationships between female characters in a nuanced and artistic manner.
Furthermore through their interactions and acts, the series highlight the resilience, empathy and solidarity that exist among women despite the challenges they may face.
Each character undergoes a transformation, thats another common trait. Mallikajaan’s journey is indeed captivating arc.
From a passionate young girl to matriarchal head of her establishment, her evolvement and final transformation revealing her true self, post having lost her beloved daughter Alamzeb to a nawab’s revolutionary son, in whom she had pinned hopes of her worthy successor to the dramatic turn of events and her final reconciliation with what destiny opens for her , represents a similar kind of journey every woman goes through. Other characters be it Fareedan, Bebbo jaan, Saima, Alamzeb all go about evolving, reclaiming their narratives.
Heeramandi beautifully portrays their evolution, showcasing journey from displaying their traits of obsessiveness , jealousy, intrigue and revenge to embracing finer qualities such as love, empathy, sacrifice and solidarity.
