J.P. Nadda, whose three-year term as BJP National President would come to an end on 20 January 2023, is likely to get an extension. Sources say that Nadda will receive an extension as the party chief in the BJP’s national executive meeting, which is likely to be held in New Delhi next month. According to sources, the extension could last until the end of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP constitution allows the party president to serve two consecutive three-year terms. Similarly, there is a provision that organisational elections be held in at least 50% of the state units, a process that is initiated by the party president. The process of internal polls will commence after the Lok Sabha polls are over in April–May 2024.
Shivpal Yadav, the leader of the Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohiya), is well-known for his organisational skills and ability to mobilise party members. If given the chance, he will play a critical role in the party’s election campaign in 2024. SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav is likely to delegate the responsibility of Eastern UP to Shivpal Yadav and give him the charge of coordinating with smaller parties in UP for alliances. Shivpal recently paid a visit to Pratapgarh and Prayagraj and said he would visit every district of Uttar Pradesh to strengthen the party cadre. While the SP lost three allies in UP following the 2022 Assembly elections (SBSP), Mahaan Dal, and Janwadi Party), it more than made up for the loss by bringing Shivpal Yadav into the fold.
