At noon today, the grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya experienced a remarkable event during Ram Navami as a beam of sunlight, known as ‘Surya Tilak’, illuminated the forehead of the Ram Lalla idol. Utilizing advanced scientific techniques, a 5.8 centimeter light beam was directed onto the deity’s forehead for approximately 3 to 3.5 minutes. This extraordinary feat was achieved through a specialized instrument designed by a team of ten esteemed Indian scientists stationed at the temple.

The mechanism, officially named the ‘Surya Tilak mechanism’, involved the collaboration of scientists from leading institutions and employed a sophisticated apparatus comprising mirrors and lenses. Dr. Pradeep Kumar Ramacharla, a scientist from the Central Building Research Institute, explained the intricate workings of the optomechanical system, which included mirrors and lenses fitted inside a tilt mechanism and piping system.

The development of this mechanism also involved collaboration between scientists from the Central Building Research Institute and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bengaluru. Employing principles of solar tracking and technical support from various institutions, the team ensured the precise alignment of sunlight rays onto the idol’s forehead. Dr. Pradeep Chauhan expressed confidence in the flawless execution of the ‘Surya Tilak’ ritual, which was meticulously timed without relying on electricity or batteries.

Additionally, the Indian Institute of Astrophysics contributed its expertise in positional astronomy to reconcile the lunar and solar calendars, ensuring the ceremonious anointment of the idol on every Ram Navami.
