The two-day medical conclave on “Latest Trends in Endocrine, Diabetes, and Cardio Renal Metabolic Problems” concluded today, emphasizing cardiovascular diseases among diabetic patients.

Senior endocrinologists, including Dr. Vipan Talwar, Dr. Rajeev Khanna, and Dr. Emmy Grewal, scrutinized the growing social media claims of diabetes reversal, labeling them as a misnomer. They argued that ‘remission’ is a more accurate term, indicating a temporary relief rather than a cure. This remission is possible primarily for recent type 2 diabetes patients who adhere to a low-calorie or low-carbohydrate diet, regular exercise, and achieve significant weight loss.

Dr. S.K. Singh, head of endocrinology at Benaras Hindu University, highlighted the advancements in medicine aimed at managing diabetic patients with cardiovascular and other comorbidities by addressing root causes to save lives.

Senior cardiologist Dr. Mohit Gupta inspired doctors to adopt lifestyle changes for personal well-being and effective patient care. He advocated for a “hi-touch” approach, emphasizing empathy over technology in medical practice.

Lt. Gen. K.J.S. (Tiny) Dhillon, PVSM, UVSM, VSM, the chief guest, shared his experiences, underscoring the close encounters with death faced by both army personnel and doctors, with a distinct emotional impact on the latter.

The Sweet Diabetes Foundation and the 3rd edition of EPIC (Empowering Physicians in International Practices for Advanced Patient Care) honored Dr. Anil Bhansali, former head of endocrinology at PGIMER, and Lt Gen Dr. Narendra Kotwal, recently retired Director of AFMC, Pune, with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
