Five people committed suicide due to harassment of money-lending apps mainly created by the Chinese businessmen. The Daily Guardian visited one such family where the victim committed suicide, to take stock of the ground situation. TDG found that even after committing suicide, the app agents are calling them to repay money.
A young man, 36-year-old G. Chandra Mohan, committed suicide due to harassment in Medchel area which is located on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Mohan, a father of three, who was found dead at his home in Gundlapochampally, by his wife. The Rachakonda police said that Chandra Mohan had taken multiple loans from several lending apps to the tune of Rs 80,000 and repaid up to Rs 3 lakh. Still the app owners are asking them to pay.
Saritha, wife of Chandra Mohan, told TSG, “Despite my husband committing suicide, still they call and abuse me. They are using very filthy language. Even today after death two days of death of my husband, I got calls from them.”
After a few deaths were reported, the police swung into action and have arrested 29 persons so far, including three Chinese nationals, for operating instant loan apps that do not have any approval from the RBI.
