PM Shehbaz Sharif Resigns From PML-N Presidency In Pakistan

Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, tendered his resignation as the President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), according to reports from ARY News.

Sources indicated that Shehbaz Sharif submitted his resignation to Nawaz Sharif, the PML-N supremo. Following this development, the PML-N announced plans to convene a general council meeting in Lahore on May 28 to elect a new president. This decision came after an earlier announcement to hold a similar meeting on May 11, as reported by ARY News.

During a recent press conference, Rana Sanaullah highlighted that the Punjab chapter of the PML-N had urged Nawaz Sharif to reassume the party presidency. The party members emphasized Nawaz Sharif’s leadership and its significance in achieving the party’s goals. A resolution supporting Nawaz Sharif’s return to lead the party was reportedly passed during the PML-N Punjab meeting.

It is noteworthy that Nawaz Sharif had faced legal restrictions on holding public office following his conviction in 2018. However, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) acquitted him in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references on November 29 and December 12, respectively.

After his acquittal, Nawaz Sharif contested and won the General Elections 2024 from NA-130 Lahore. His return to elected office marked a significant development in Pakistan’s political landscape, setting the stage for potential leadership changes within the PML-N.
