TRAILER OUT: ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Explores Mufasa and Scar’s Early Bond

Disney has provided a new look at the legendary characters Mufasa and Scar with the release of the trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King, showcased at the Disney Entertainment Showcase during D23. The trailer, also available on Disney’s official social media channels, offers a fresh perspective on the early, more innocent bond between the iconic lion brothers before their relationship takes a darker turn.

This new angle highlights the deep connection between Mufasa and Scar as they transition from playful cubs to adult lions. At the D23 event, attendees were treated to a touching scene from the film featuring an original song by Lin-Manuel Miranda, titled “I Always Wanted A Brother.” This track underscores a sequence where Mufasa and Scar develop a close, brotherly friendship. Miranda, who joined the stage unexpectedly, explained that his involvement came after being inspired by the film’s screenplay while working on Encanto. He mentioned that the music “just began to form in my head” as he read the script.

Set to release on December 20, Mufasa: The Lion King is directed by Barry Jenkins, known for his Oscar-winning film Moonlight. The story is framed by the baboon Rafiki recounting Mufasa’s tale to his granddaughter Kiara, with the narrative unfolding through flashbacks. It details Mufasa’s journey from an orphaned cub to his encounter with Taka, a compassionate lion of royal lineage.

The voice cast includes Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, with Kelvin Harrison Jr., Mads Mikkelsen, and Thandiwe Newton in significant roles. Blue Ivy Carter will voice Kiara, while Beyoncé returns as Nala and Tiffany Boone voices Sarabi. Additionally, Donald Glover will reprise his role as Simba, and Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner will return as Timon and Pumbaa, respectively.
