Legendary Spanish actress Marisa Paredes has passed away at the age of 78. According to Variety, she died on Tuesday in Madrid from heart failure.
Over the course of her career, Paredes appeared in 75 films, but she will be most remembered for her collaborations with director Pedro Almodóvar, starring in five of his films: Dark Habits (1983), High Heels (1991), The Flower of My Secret (1995), All About My Mother (1999), and The Skin I Live In (2011). Of these, she considered her performance in The Flower of My Secret to be one of her best, a film that marked the start of Almodóvar’s return to the world of his mother—a journey that continues to this day.
In The Flower of My Secret, Paredes portrayed a chic romantic novelist, who initially appears out of place in her village of origin.
Paredes worked with Spain’s most iconic modern directors, starting with Fernando Trueba in his 1980 debut Opera Prima, where she showcased her sense of humor while playing a grand dame. Her notable roles also included Agustí Villaronga’s In a Glass Cage (1986), as well as appearances in Mexican director Arturo Ripstein’s Deep Crimson (1996), No One Writes to the Colonel (1999), and Guillermo del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone.
