At the Red Sea Film Festival this week, Emily Blunt was honored for her remarkable career achievements. During the event, she reflected on her journey in the film industry, her collaborations with iconic director Steven Spielberg, and the valuable lessons she has learned along the way.

Blunt expressed her amazement at receiving the award, calling it a surreal experience. “It’s a wild thing because it’s almost like seeing your life flash before your eyes,” she shared, as reported by Deadline. She added, “It’s very moving and surreal to see it all played back at me. And, yeah, it was cool.” Humorously, she noted that she hopes the recognition is more of a “so far, so good” accolade rather than a lifetime achievement.

The Oppenheimer Oscar nominee also spoke about her upcoming projects, including the highly anticipated film The Smashing Machine, directed by Benny Safdie. In the movie, Blunt stars opposite Dwayne Johnson as the girlfriend-turned-wife of UFC champion Mark Kerr. Describing the project, Blunt said, “It’s about struggle,” emphasizing the emotional and physical challenges faced by fighters, especially regarding addiction and relationships. “It’s just a very intense, very beautiful movie,” she added, as per Deadline.

Blunt also teased an undisclosed project with Steven Spielberg but kept the details under wraps. “We start in February, and that’s all I can tell you,” she revealed. Recalling her excitement when Spielberg reached out, she said, “I was so awestruck to even get the call. And then in the meeting, he goes, ‘Would you like to know why you’re here?’ And I was like, ‘Yes please.’ I was trying not to dork out and just talk to him about endless scenes from Jaws that I’ve been obsessed with for years. He’s really magical. I’m very happy.”

Reflecting on her career, Blunt emphasized the importance of balance in her life. “It’s huge in my life. I need it,” she said. She noted that becoming a mother and gaining more prominence in Hollywood have made her time on set even more precious. “That immersion has become increasingly something I’m very protective of and something that I really hold very dear.”

She also spoke about the value of pushing boundaries in her work. “It is the true escape. It is like this parallel life that I’m very addicted to, and I need it, and I love it,” she explained. “I’ve learned that it’s okay to be scared all the time, you know, when you’re approaching something new. It’s good for me to put my feet to the fire. I don’t want to be straight-jacketed. I don’t want to be safe.” According to Deadline, this mindset has made her “bolder” in her choice of roles.

When asked about directing, Blunt admitted she remains unsure about taking that step, though she enjoys producing. “I don’t know about directing yet, I really am trying to learn never to say never… I’m really enjoying producing stuff, and even if I don’t end up being in it, that’s fine, I love building worlds and stories,” she said.

Blunt also expressed a desire to return to the stage. “I think I would really love to get back on stage at some point, it’s been 20 years or something,” she said.

She addressed the possibility of a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, her 2014 hit with Tom Cruise. “I mean, there’s hints of it, but I don’t think anything’s been written,” she said. “We’re always kind of throwing ideas around. I think if we can beat it, or we can at least match it—because I don’t know how Doug Liman got so much mileage out of a repeating day, it was just so brilliant.” She humorously added, “Could my back take it anymore? That’s the thing… But we’ll see,” as per Deadline.
