‘Dune 2’, which hit screens on March 1, is expected to open to a good response at the box office.

According to exhibitor Akshaye Rathi, the film is likely to collect between Rs 3 crore and Rs 4 crore on the first day. It, however, may not find wide patronage outside urban markets given its theme.

“Dune 2 is set to take a positive start but will be limited to the urban markets and big cities. That said, Rs 3 crore to Rs 4 crore appears to be on the cards,” he told The Daily Guardian.

Rathi further added that it won’t pose a threat to ‘Crakk’, which is in its second week, as its target audience is different from that of the Vidyut Jammwal-led actioner.

“Both these films are meant for completely different audiences. There is no overlap. Those who watch Crakk may not even be interested in Dune 2. Crakk is for the smaller cities and the mass markets,” added Rathi.

Additionally, ‘Dune 2’ is unlikely to face competition from ‘Operation Valentine’ and ‘Kaagaz 2’ as they are essentially word-of-mouth films.

The Hollywood biggie, a sequel to the 2021 blockbuster ‘Dune’, is directed by Denis Villeneuve. It centres on the protagonist’s attempts at waging a war on his bitter foes.

According to IMDb, the synopsis reads: “Paul Atreides unites with Chani and the Fremen while seeking revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family.”

The science-fiction drama features Timothée Chalamet in the lead. The cast includes Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Zendaya, and Dave Bautista.

‘Dune 2’ was shot on a budget of $190 million (about Rs 15,74 crore). Denis Villeneuve plans to make a third ‘Dune’ film. Based on the book ‘Messaiah’, it is expected to be a ‘fitting finale’ to the saga.

‘Dune 2’ premiered in theatres in India on March 1.
