Uttar Pradesh, which will witness an electoral battle in 2022, has bagged big in PM Narendra Modi’s Cabinet expansion. The state has got the highest representation, as seven more leaders have got Cabinet berth from UP. The Daily Guardian spoke to Ajay Kumar Mishra, who has been appointed the new Minister of State for Home Affairs, on his new roles and challenges. Excerpts:

Q: An important portfolio related to the country’s internal security has been bestowed upon you. What’s the priority for you as Minister?

A: It is only in the BJP where even a small karyakarta can rise up the ranks and become a minister and, in the same way, I have also been entrusted with this esteemed responsibility. I will try to give my 100% to live up to the expectations of PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Q: Recently, the Jammu airbase was attacked by drones which intruded from Pakistan. How big a challenge is it for you and how will you tackle it?

A: Prior to this, many challenges came before us from across the border. You know how we entered into enemy territory and conducted a surgical strike. We will befittingly tackle this threat (of drones) as well and would pay Pakistan and its terrorists with the same coin. Modi ji ke raj mein hum kisi ka udhar rakhte nahi.

Q: But what about UP? You think this expansion will strengthen the BJP as elections are inching closer?

A: You must have seen the recently declared results of Panchayat polls. BJP is already strong in the state and will return to power too.
