In a thrilling Africa Cup of Nations last-16 clash, Egypt faced the Democratic Republic of Congo in San Pedro, and the match culminated in a dramatic penalty shootout. Egypt’s goalkeeper, Mohamed Abou Gabal, became the center of attention as he missed his penalty, hitting the crossbar. The opposite number, Lionel Mpasi, then capitalized on the opportunity, securing an 8-7 victory for DR Congo.
The Laurent Pokou Stadium witnessed jubilant scenes among the Congolese players and fans, as they advanced to the quarter-finals in Abidjan, where they would face Guinea on Friday.
The game saw Meschack Elia giving DR Congo the lead with a close-range header, but the advantage was short-lived as Mostafa Mohamed equalized for Egypt, scoring his fourth goal of the tournament from the penalty spot just before halftime.
Extra time brought further challenges for Egypt when midfielder Mohamed Hamdy received a red card. Despite the absence of their injured star Mohamed Salah, the Pharaohs opted for a defensive strategy, holding on as the game headed to a decisive penalty shootout.
This victory for DR Congo marked a historic moment, as it was the first time in 50 years that they beat Egypt in a Cup of Nations clash. The match also showcased a trend of draws for both teams in the Ivory Coast this year, with Egypt extending their streak to six consecutive draws dating back to the last tournament in Cameroon. Additionally, it was their fifth extra-time encounter in succession in knockout games.
The lack of a decisive finish within the regulation 90 minutes proved costly for Egypt, and the red card further complicated their chances. The sweltering heat of San Pedro added to the challenges faced by both teams.
DR Congo’s lead in the 37th minute came from Yoann Wissa’s deflected cross, with Elia heading the ball over the line. Egypt’s equalizer before halftime was the result of a VAR-reviewed penalty awarded after Congolese defender Dylan Batubinsika struck Ahmed Hegazi in the penalty box with an extended arm.
Despite Mostafa Mohamed confidently converting the penalty to net his fourth tournament goal, his later miss in the shootout contributed to Egypt’s exit from the competition.
