British media outlets have reported suspicions that China was behind a recent cyber attack targeting a UK Ministry of Defence contractor’s IT system. The Financial Times disclosed on Tuesday that the personal information of UK military personnel was the focus of the attack, which specifically targeted an IT system containing names and bank details of active military members, reservists, and thousands of veterans. However, an initial investigation by the Ministry of Defence has not uncovered evidence of data being extracted from the compromised system.
In response to the cyber intrusion, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s administration has taken swift action by enlisting the support of private security specialists. These experts are collaborating with the defence ministry’s ongoing investigation into the hack. Additionally, an external contractor has been engaged to monitor online platforms for any potential leaks of information originating from the breached IT system.
This incident is not the first time China has come under scrutiny for cyber activities targeting UK interests. Earlier disclosures by the UK government-linked China to two separate cyber campaigns. The National Cyber Security Centre, a division of the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), attributed a cyberattack on Britain’s Electoral Commission between 2021 and 2022 to a China state-affiliated cyber entity. Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden informed the House of Commons of this assessment, emphasizing the high likelihood of Chinese state involvement.
British officials have condemned these alleged cyber attacks, with Foreign Secretary David Cameron calling them “completely unacceptable.” China, however, has vehemently denied any involvement, dismissing the accusations as “fabricated and malicious slanders.” The Chinese embassy in London issued a statement reiterating their opposition to such claims.
