The Dharmashastra National Law University, Jabalpur, DNLU has introduced the landmark policy in order to grant menstrual leave for its female students, as per a circular dated September 29, 2023. The Significant decision comes with the approval of the competent authority and is in line with the commitment of university in order to provide the special arrangements for its female students.
The said intiative was set in motion in response to the request which is being made by the Student Bar Association Assessment Year 2022-2023 and as the result, it has officially been notified by the University that the full-time female students now have the option to compensate for any missed classes due to their menstrual cycle.
The rules which are governing the general make-up policy remain consistent with the current practice, wherein the court allowed for a maximum of 6 makeup classes per subject per semester. Therefore, the office of the Dean of Students Welfare will serve as the approving authority, for the female students who are seeking avail of the said policy.
Dr. Praveen Tripathi, the Associate Professor and Dean of Students Welfare at the DNLU stated that the Menstrual leave not only supports student’s physical and mental well-being, but also addresses the societal stigma surrounding menstruation. Thus, by acknowledging the natural needs of individuals, this court breaks down stereotypes and taboos. This court believed that the said process will normalise the taboo on talking about it among students and administration, which will foster a more inclusive and empathetic university space. The initiative taken will enhance the overall educational experiences.
