Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, decried the death of a 20-year-old woman who was run over by a car and dragged for about seven kilometres in Sultanpuri, the capital. Additionally, he called for the death penalty of the five accused, who were arrested for negligently causing death and are thought to have been intoxicated at the time of the early-Sunday incident.

“What happened to our sister in Kanjhawala is very shameful. I hope that the culprits will be punished severely,” Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi. Addressing a presser later, he said: “This can happen to anyone’s daughter. No matter how influential, politically connected a convict is, he should be hanged.”

Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena earlier said that all aspects of the case were being looked into. “My head hangs in shame over the inhuman crime in Kanjhawla-Sultanpuri today morning and I am shocked at the monstrous insensitivity of the perpetrators. Have been monitoring with @CPDelhi and the accused have been apprehended. All aspects are being thoroughly looked into,” he tweeted.

The fact that the body was discovered by the police naked and with fractured limbs raised the possibility that she had been both killed and sexually assaulted. Later on, it was stated that it appeared to be a case of hasty and careless driving that caused the death. According to the victim’s family, she was sexually molested.

“It was not at all an accident. What sort of accident is this when there was not even a single cloth on my daughter’s body. We want complete investigation,” her mother, Rekha Devi, said.

The National Commission for Women has written to the commissioner of the Delhi Police, requesting a prompt and impartial investigation into the event.
