Covid crisis looms large over Punjab Assembly session

Two days ahead of the state Vidhan Sabha session, 23 ministers, MLAs test positive for coronavirus.

The country recorded 67,151 new coronavirus cases and 1,059 new deaths in the last 24 hours. The fresh numbers have pushed the number of cases to 32,34,474 cases, including 59,449 deaths. At least 24,67,758 patients have recovered from the infection in the country, pushing the recovery rate to 76.29 per cent. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said 23 ministers and MLAs were coronavirus positive two days before the Vidhan Sabha session on 28 August.

 Maharashtra continuous to remain the hardest-hit in the pandemic as the state recorded highest single-day surge of 14,888 new Covid-19 cases in the last twenty-four hours, taking the total number of infections in the state to 7,18,711. The tally includes 5,22,427 recovered cases. Maharashtra State Chief Secretary said that all State Public Service exams are postponed due to Covid-19 pandemic. New schedule for the exams will be announced later.

Meanwhile, Delhi registered the highest single-day spike in August with 1,693 new coronavirus cases and 17 deaths in a single day, taking the state tally to 1,65,764 while the death toll rose to 4,347. The tally includes 1,48,897 recovered cases and 12,520 active cases.

Andhra Pradesh reported a new record high of 10,830 new coronavirus positive cases in the span of twenty-four hours, taking the total number of cases to 3,82,469 including 92,208 active cases, 2,86,720 recoveries and 3541 deaths.

Kerala reported the highest ever single day surge of 2,476 fresh coronavirus cases, taking the total infection count to 64,354. While the death toll reached 257 after 13 fresh fatalities were reported. 

 Tamil Nadu registered 5,958 fresh coronavirus cases and 118 deaths taking the total number of cases in the state to 3,97,261 while the death toll rose to 6,839. The tally includes 3,38,060 recovered cases and 52,362 active cases. 

Gujarat’s Covid-19 tally crossed the 90,000-mark and rose to 90,139 with addition of 1,197 new cases. With 17 fatalities, the total count mounted to 2,947. A total of 1,047 patients were discharged in the day, taking the overall count of recoveries in the state to 72,308. The state’s recovery rate now stands at 80.22 per cent.

Odisha too registered its highest single-day spike in Covid-19 cases as 3,371 more people tested positive for the infection, while 13 fresh fatalities pushed the state’s coronavirus death toll to 441.

 Uttar Pradesh reported 82 Covid-19 fatalities taking the death toll to 3,141, while highest single-day spike of 5,898 new cases took the infection tally to 2,03,020. There are a total of 51,317 active cases in the state, while 1,48,562 people have been treated and discharged.

Haryana reported 1,397 new Covid-19 cases and 11 deaths in last twenty-four hours, taking total cases to 58,005 including 47,613 recoveries and 634 deaths.
