A directive issued by a senior police officer in Sopore, seeking the rescheduling of political activities, has ignited a controversy, drawing accusations of bias from the National Conference (NC) against the UT administration, alleging interference with the electoral process.

Sopore, nestled within the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency slated for polls on May 20 in the fifth phase of parliamentary elections, has become the focal point of contention. NC leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is contesting the seat, amplifying the sensitivity surrounding the issue.

The order issued on May 8 by the office of Senior Superintendent of Police in Sopore, Divya D, outlined the rescheduling of various political events in the region. It mandated the postponement of a car rally from May 9 to May 18, rescheduling a political rally in Rafiabad from May 10 to May 18, and omitted to provide a new date for a May 12 gathering in Behrampora, all of which were slated to feature Abdullah prominently in his campaign.
Amidst allegations of favoritism, the NC is gearing up to approach the Election Commission (EC) seeking intervention. The directive also included the cancellation of a People’s Conference rally in Rafiabad, addressed by local party workers.
Though the directive lacked specific reasons, sources hinted at the ongoing cordon and search operations due to intelligence reports suggesting the presence of foreign terrorists in the region.

Tanvir Sadiq, the chief spokesperson of the NC, condemned the administration’s actions, denouncing the alleged hindrance to a fair electoral process in the Baramulla constituency. Speaking from the party headquarters in Srinagar, Sadiq underscored the necessity of equal political space and urged the EC to ensure fairness and transparency in the electoral proceedings.
As the controversy escalates, the spotlight remains on ensuring a level playing field for all parties, preserving the integrity of the democratic process in the region.
