The extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) is set to convene a meeting on Saturday to assess the party’s performance in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. Scheduled to commence at 11 am, the meeting will be followed by another session by the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) at 5:30 pm.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary (Communications), highlighted the significance of the elections, terming it a “moral defeat” for Narendra Modi and the BJP while uplifting the morale of the Indian National Congress and the INDIA Janbandhan.
Congress leader Manickam Tagore expressed a prevailing sentiment among party members that Rahul Gandhi should lead the Lok Sabha. He emphasized that the CWC session would focus on reviewing the party’s performance in the 2024 elections, while the CPP meeting would involve the election of the CPP chairperson and discussions regarding the appointment of the Congress leader in the Lok Sabha.
Amidst the BJP forming alliances for government formation, leaders from the INDIA bloc have opted for a “wait and watch” approach. Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain anticipated proposals on various aspects during the CWC meeting, including the formation of a new CPP for the 18th Lok Sabha and the appointment of the LoP.
Salman Khurshid, another Congress leader, expressed optimism about the NDA alliance, hoping for a positive impact on the country’s future. With the Congress emerging as the second-largest party in the elections, key leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are expected to participate in the discussions.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to take oath for a third successive term on June 9, following the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections.
