Ahead of Lok Sabha elections, Ravneet Singh Bittu, the Congress MP representing Ludhiana constituency in Punjab, made a significant political move on Tuesday by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)

Bittu, who previously held the seat for the Anandpur Sahib Lok Sabha constituency from 2009 to 2014, brings a wealth of political experience to his new party. Notably, in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, Bittu secured victory by defeating Shiromani Akali Dal’s (SAD) Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema with an impressive margin of 67,204 votes.

Having served as the leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha from March to July 2021, Bittu’s decision to switch allegiances marks a significant shift in Punjab’s political landscape. His political journey has seen victories in multiple constituencies, including Ludhiana in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, and previously from Anandpur Sahib in 2009. Despite his political successes, Bittu faced adversity in January 2021 when he was assaulted at the Singhu border during a ‘Jan Sansad’ program, highlighting the challenges faced by politicians in the line of duty.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, Bittu emerged victorious once again, defeating Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Harvinder Singh Phoolka with a margin of 19,709 votes, while Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate Manpreet Singh Ayali secured the third position in the constituency. In the subsequent 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Bittu continued his winning streak by defeating Lok Insaaf Party’s (LIP) Simarjeet Singh Bains with an impressive margin of 76,372 votes, with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate Maheshinder Singh Grewal trailing in third place.

With his entry into the BJP fold, Ravneet Singh Bittu’s political journey takes a new direction, promising to influence the dynamics of Punjab’s political arena in the upcoming elections.
