During an exclusive interview with “India News” on Thursday, Union Minister Smriti Irani spoke candidly on the Women’s Reservation Bill. While she lauded the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre for the grand initiative, she fiercely slammed the Congress. She said: “Ever since Prime Minister Modi started his journey in BJP, we have given reservation to 33% women in the party organisation. In 1971, the government had constituted a committee regarding the status of women. Its report came in 1974. It was mentioned in it that Bharatiya Jana Sangh has said that women should be given constitutional guarantees. We have given it a constitutional form.”
Taking a dig at the Opposition, she said that they had to join the voice of PM Modi. On the question of the Opposition not being able to protest, he said that if PM Modi is there, then it is possible.
Smriti Irani claimed that the Nari Shakti Bandan Act will bring about social changes. He further said that Congress is demanding its implementation now so that it can go to court on the Women’s Reservation Bill. She also hit back at former Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s statement on immediate implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill.
He said, “Everyone knows that Rahul Gandhi is not an expert on the Constitution. In such a situation, it is requested that people read Article 82 of the Constitution.” She said that Congress was in power from 2010 to 2014, but its allies had opposed it. “We supported them regarding women’s reservation in Rajya Sabha,” she said.
