Roaming freely around the temples and streets of Mathura, Chiku Ustad isn’t just another monkey. His daily wait for a share of bhang, offered by the devotees, has made him an endearing mascot. His presence adds a humorous and charming twist to the town’s spiritual traditions.
Bhang, an edible preparation made from the leaves of the cannabis plant, originated in the Indian subcontinent and has been used in food and drink since as early as 1000 BC. Traditionally, it is consumed during the spring festivals of Holi and Maha Shivaratri.
