The Government in the case is likely to take action against Twitter over the horrific Manipur video of two women being paraded naked by a group of men, the video went viral on Wednesday, wherein it triggered waves of outrage and condemnation.
The social media platforms are also warned by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on compliance with the new IT rules that reiterate freedom of expression with “reasonable restrictions.”
The video circulated that it could lead the problems in law and order are not permitted under the law, the government has warned.
Last night, the order was issued wherein it initiated action against Twitter for non-compliance was issued.
Therefore, the IT ministry is working across platforms to ensure that the video is not circulated further.
In the present case, the video shows two women paraded naked and molested by a mob and the women were being dragged to a field and allegedly gang-raped later.
The said incident took place on May 04, 2023 which being the day after clashes broke out between the valley-majority Meitei and the hill-majority Kuki tribe in Manipur over the Meiteis’ demand for Scheduled Tribes, ST status.
In the Manipur violence over 120 people have died in the ethnic violence and thousands have been internally displaced and are now living in relief camps.
Yesterday, one of the men got arrested after the video went viral on social media.
It has been stated by the officer that we have identified the men and will arrest them soon, thus, the senior police officer had said on Wednesday and the two gang-rape survivors came to the police some 15 days after the horrific assault. Therefore, they went to Kangpokpi, though the crime did not take place there, but they have got the leads and the officer stated that he will catch the men in a day or two.
Further, the Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh stated that he has ordered the police to investigate this case in priority.
