The Central Government appointed Justice Sheo Kumar Singh-I, the Judicial Member of the National Green Tribunal, NGT to act as the Chairperson of the NGT until the date on which a new Chairperson is being appointed.
The Centre appointed the acting chief justice in exercise of the powers conferred under section 11 of the NGT Act, 2010 reading with clause (a) of rule 7 of the Tribunal, the Conditions of Service Rules, 2021.
The Justice Sheo Kumar Singh joined the Judicial Service in the year 1984 and has served as a District Judge in various districts of Uttar Pradesh. It has also been held positions as the Registrar, the Judicial at the Supreme Court of India and the Registrar General at the High Court of Judicature in Allahabad before being elevated as a High Court Judge.
Justice Sheo Kumar Singh was being appointed as an observer of Ram Janam Bhumi in Ayodhya, Faizabad by the Apex Court to oversee the excavation work which is conducted by the expert team of the Archaeological Survey of India.
However, Justice Sheo Kumar Singh was being elevated as the Judge of Allahabad High Court and served there till the year 2018. Justice Singh was being appointed as Judicial Member of National Green Tribunal, NGT in March 2020.
Therefore, the position of chairperson has become vacant since the former Chairperson, Justice A.K., has retired.
