Investigation of post poll violence in West Bengal is in full swing in the state. The Central Bureau of Investigation has started investigation in the districts on the basis of the allegations. Several FIRs have already been lodged. Besides, arrests are also going on.
However, this time the police filed a case of attempted rape in the violence after the first vote. The case has been filed on the basis of a complaint made by a woman from Murshidabad. The woman alleged that the police did not show any activity in the investigation of the incident.
According to CBI sources, the allegation was made in Navgram of Murshidabad. Violence after the vote led to allegations of attempted rape of a woman. The woman claimed that even after repeatedly approaching the police, there was no benefit. He later approached the court. The case has been filed on the basis of that allegation. It is to be noted that the court had directed the CBI to investigate the cases which were not investigated by the state police in the post-poll violence.
There were several allegations of political violence after the Ekushey vote. The BJP made most of the allegations. They allege that in many cases there is police inaction. The state police administration has shown reluctance to file a case against the ruling camp. Following the order of the Calcutta High Court on August 19, the CBI has started an investigation into the post-poll violence.
Meanwhile, the High Court has directed the CBI and SIT to submit a fresh investigation report in the post-poll violence case. The order was passed by a division bench of Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava and Justice IP Mukherjee. The judge also wants a list of homeless political activists.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the state police had earlier submitted a progress report on the post-poll violence case. That report is one month old. Therefore, the High Court has asked for a new report to know exactly at what stage the investigation is at present and how far it has gone. According to the CBI probe, FIRs have been registered against a total of 40 people so far. The investigation is still ongoing.
The state government has already approached the Supreme Court over the case. The state government had said in the application that the CBI had started the probe without the state’s permission. In this sense, the state is before the apex court. In that case, the apex court has been told by the Centre that the state has no power to allow the CBI to investigate or stop the CBI investigation.
