The Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, remains one of India’s most debated pieces of legislation. Enacted during the tenure of Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, it sought to freeze the religious character of places of worship as they existed on 15th August 1947, the day of India’s independence.
