The Supreme Court has granted bail to four Indians accused in the murder case of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. According to News18, first-degree murder charges and conspiracy in the murder of Nijjar have been filed against four accused, namely Karan Brar, Amandeep Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh. News18 reported that it had earlier concluded that evidence was not sufficient to proceed with this case.
Now the case will directly indict to be brought before the Supreme Court of British Columbia for its trial on 11 February, 2025. This simply means that it is going directly for trial bypassing the preliminary inquiry and quickening the judicial process. Court records, cited by India Today, indicate that all four defendants are currently out of custody under specific conditions.
Nijjar was the leader of the Khalistan Tiger Force. He was shot dead in Surrey, British Columbia, near a gurdwara on 18 June 2023. May 2024: Karanpreet and Kamalpreet were arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, along with Karan Brar.
India-Canada tensions further fuelled following the killing, with Canada saying Indian agents were behind Nijjar’s murder while New Delhi is accusing Ottawa of harbouring Khalistani extremists. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asserted “credible allegations” in September 2023 that linked Indian government agents to the killing although concrete evidence has yet to materialize.
