Indian Professional Struggles to Survive on Low Salary in Canada

An Indian professional who previously worked at Google India shared his struggles with surviving on a significantly lower salary in Canada. Despite having more than three years of experience at Google, his move to Canada has resulted in financial challenges, as his work experience from India is not being recognized by Canadian employers. The individual spoke openly about his frustrations in a viral video on the Instagram page “Salary Scale,” run by digital creator Piyush Mongal.

From a prestigious job to financial struggles

In the video, the professional revealed that his current annual salary in Canada is $17,500 (Rs 10,77,511). He expressed his disappointment, saying, “I can hardly survive on this income.” This is a stark contrast to his previous role at Google India, where he earned a much higher salary. The drastic reduction in income has left him frustrated, particularly since his experience working for a global tech giant is not being valued in Canada.

Canadian employers not acknowledging Indian experience

The professional explained that he has had to downplay his work experience on his resume because recruiters in Canada do not count his time working in India. “Ever since I moved here, I’ve been reducing my experience on my resume because recruiters aren’t counting my work in India,” he said. Despite his tenure at Google, a globally recognized company, he feels overlooked. “It just doesn’t make any sense,” he added, highlighting the bias toward local Canadian experience over foreign qualifications.

Local candidates preferred over foreign ones

He also expressed concerns about the job market in Canada, noting that recruiters are primarily seeking Canadian candidates. “Recruiters here are looking for Canadian candidates, not Indian ones,” he said, emphasizing the difficulty many immigrants face in gaining employment despite their skills and qualifications.

Canada’s Policy Shift on Study Permits, especially For Indians

Recently, the Canadian government announced a reduction in study permits for international students, which could impact many Indian nationals. In a post on X, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “We’re granting 35% fewer international student permits this year. And next year, that number’s going down by another 10%.” Trudeau further explained that immigration benefits the economy, but they must crack down on “bad actors” who abuse the system and exploit students.

Trudeau’s decision affects a popular destination for Indian students

Canada has long been a top destination for Indian students, with an estimated 427,000 Indian students currently studying there. According to the High Commission of India in Ottawa, education is a key area of mutual interest between the two countries. However, the reduction in study permits will likely affect many Indian students, limiting their chances of studying in Canada and impacting future immigration and work opportunities.
