Maruti Suzuki To Launch EVs Soon; Awaits Policies For Diverse Clean Tech

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch its electric vehicles (EVs) in the coming months, according to Chairman R.C. Bhargava. In the auto giant’s 2023-24 annual report, Bhargava emphasized the need for a policy framework that supports a range of clean technologies, including CNG, biogas, and ethanol.

Policy Framework for Clean Technology

“Some states, like Uttar Pradesh, have already taken steps in this direction,” Bhargava noted. “We now await a policy framework that would lead to the promotion of all technologies that result in petrol and diesel cars being replaced by cars using other technologies.”

He expressed optimism that the government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will focus on infrastructure development, fiscal prudence, inflation control, and manufacturing reforms.

Diversified Approach to Sustainable Mobility

Addressing Maruti Suzuki’s gradual adoption of EVs, Bhargava stated, “We decided to adopt a more diversified approach to meeting national objectives and did not want to put all our eggs in one basket.”

He highlighted the importance of offering customers various technologies and price options, saying, “While electric cars use increases, customers should be encouraged to buy cars using strong hybrid technology, or CNG or ethanol and biogas.”

Bhargava also mentioned the potential for rapid acceptance of electric cars, which depends on infrastructure development and cost reduction through localized production and improved technology.

Advantages of Alternative Power Sources

  • Hybrids: Improve efficiency by 35-45% and reduce carbon emissions by 25-35%
  • CNG Cars: Though not as clean as hybrids, they are better than petrol or diesel cars and do not rely on oil. Maruti Suzuki expects to sell about 600,000 CNG cars this year, driven by government efforts to enhance CNG infrastructure.
  • Biogas: A completely renewable resource that is carbon negative and has no import content. Biogas production also offers environmental benefits. Maruti Suzuki has initiated biogas production trials at its Manesar plant and anticipates supportive government policies.

Bhargava stated, “We are also working on modifying engines of cars and presently can use petrol blended with 20 percent ethanol. Technology exists to enable cars to use higher amounts of ethanol.

Despite these advancements, Bhargava stressed the importance of addressing the needs of consumers who cannot afford expensive cars, ensuring Maruti Suzuki remains accessible to all segments of society.
