LONDON: A 90-year-old woman named Margaret Keenan on Tuesday became the first person in the world to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine as part of the mass vaccination programme being rolled out across the UK.

She was given the injection at 6.31 GMT—the first of 800,000 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine that will be given in the coming weeks. Up to four million more are expected by the end of the month. According to the BBC, Keenan, who turns 91 next week, said it was the “best early birthday present”.

“I feel so privileged to be the first person vaccinated against Covid-19, it’s the best early birthday present I could wish for because it means I can finally look forward to spending time with my family and friends in the new year after being on my own for most of the year,” she added.

The UK is the first country in the world to start using the Pfizer vaccine after regulators approved its use last week.
