“Yes, I can confirm that there will be a bilateral meeting held between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping tomorrow on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit,” said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri while briefing the press on Tuesday.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Modi is in Kazan to attend the 16th BRICS Summit. In the morning, apart from the plenary session, he had a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
A major diplomatic development is on the cards today: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are slated to meet on Wednesday. The leaders will meet after India and China agreed to a key agreement on patrolling arrangements across the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh, moving closer to breaking the over four-year military standoff.
As Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri explained, discussions over the last few weeks have led to an agreement on the patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control in the India-China border area, and this is going to lead to disengagement and eventually resolve the issues that arose in 2020.
The spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Lin Jian, is no less effusive: “Over the recent period, China and India have been in close communication through diplomatic and military channels. Now, the two sides have reached a resolution on the relevant matters.”
Relations between the two nations sharply deteriorated following the deadly clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, marking the most serious military conflict between them in decades. However, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has stated that Indian and Chinese soldiers will soon resume patrolling as they did before the 2020 standoff.
