A 62-year-old retired Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court reported a scam in Mumbai this week, claiming a loss of Rs 49,998 in a phishing incident. The incident occurred on November 27 at the judge’s South Mumbai residence. The complainant received a message stating, ‘Dear Customer, your Account will be deactivated today. Please Update your Pan Card.’ After entering his PAN Card details in the provided link and submitting them, money was deducted from his bank account. A subsequent call from a bank official confirmed the unauthorized transaction.
Upon realizing the fraud, the victim deactivated his online ID and promptly contacted the cyber helpline to file a complaint. Following a preliminary inquiry, police registered a case on Monday (December 18) under relevant sections of cheating and cheating by personation of the Indian Penal Code and IT Act.
