Junaid Khan, son of Aamir Khan, makes a notable debut with ‘Maharaj,’ a film that intricately weaves the historical narrative of the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case with the life of social reformer Karsandas Mulji.

Reflecting on his unconventional acting debut, Khan emphasized the inherent drama in the story, stating, “The story felt inherently dramatic. It’s a true story, but it’s not just a retelling of history. It’s a story about what happens when you stand up for what’s right.”

Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Aditya Chopra, ‘Maharaj’ was released quietly on Netflix, foregoing traditional fanfare and pre-release promotion. Despite its understated release, the film has garnered attention for its portrayal of Mulji’s advocacy for social justice in 19th century India.

Speaking about the character of Karsandas Mulji, Junaid Khan expressed his admiration for the historical figure, noting, “He was a real person who in 1862 was talking about those things which even today are happening.”

The production faced initial challenges, including a brief legal hurdle, before being embraced by audiences for its poignant narrative and performances. Supported by Aamir Khan, the film also stars Jaideep Ahlawat and Shalini Pandey in pivotal roles.

‘Maharaj’ not only highlights a significant chapter in Indian history but also serves as a testament to cinematic storytelling. Now available for streaming on Netflix, the film invites viewers to delve into a compelling narrative that explores themes of courage, societal change, and the enduring relevance of standing up for justice.
