For many plagued by persistent acne, the pursuit of clear skin often involves a carousel of topical treatments and medications. However, recent revelations in dermatological science suggest that the key to combating acne might lie within a simple blood test.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Ajay Shah, Managing Director at Neuberg Ajay Shah Laboratory, emphasized the pivotal role of internal factors in skin health. While conventional wisdom attributes acne to hormonal imbalances, excess oil production, and bacterial growth on the skin, advancements in medical science illuminate the profound influence of internal bodily processes on skin conditions like acne.

Dr. Shah elaborated on the potential of blood tests to unveil underlying causes of acne, including hormonal imbalances and nutritional deficiencies. Low levels of vitamin D, for instance, have been linked to more severe acne, underscoring the importance of assessing internal factors in acne management.

Dr. Smriti Naswa Singh, Consultant Dermatologist at Fortis Hospital in Mulund, delineated the significance of blood tests in diagnosing different types of acne. While common acne may not necessitate blood tests, hormonal acne and adult-onset acne require thorough hormonal evaluations to identify underlying causes.

The decision to conduct blood tests is contingent upon the clinical judgment of dermatologists, as tailored approaches are essential in acne management. By pinpointing root causes through blood analysis, dermatologists can tailor treatment strategies for more effective outcomes.

Meanwhile, in another medical domain, liver function tests emerge as crucial diagnostic tools for assessing liver health. Dr. Prashant Kadam, Consultant at Fortis Hospital in Mulund, underscored the importance of liver function tests in diagnosing liver diseases and monitoring liver health.

Dr. Akash Shah, Consultant Pathologist at Neuberg Diagnostics in Ahmedabad, highlighted the significance of liver function tests for individuals with risk factors such as obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, and certain medications known to affect liver function.

As medical science continues to unveil the intricate connections between internal health and dermatological conditions like acne, blood tests emerge as indispensable tools in personalized treatment approaches, promising clearer skin and improved overall health.
