The Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) has raised concerns over the treatment of citizens during election campaigns and submitted a memorandum to Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C. The BKU demanded that political leaders, candidates, and security forces refrain from high-handedness towards citizens questioning them during campaigns.
The memorandum, presented by a delegation led by BKU presidents Harmeet Singh (Kadian), Balbir Singh (Rajewal), and Harinder Singh (Lakhowal), highlighted the need for peaceful engagement between candidates and voters. It stressed that the Election Commission should ensure that all candidates respond to people’s questions in a calm and respectful manner.
The BKU underscored the significance of citizens asserting their right to scrutinize candidates’ promises and records, marking a notable shift in democratic engagement. They emphasized that this newfound assertiveness, particularly evident in Punjab, reflects a broader demand for accountability and transparency from political leaders.
However, the BKU expressed concern over instances of intimidation tactics used by some politicians to stifle dissent, including detaining or harassing peaceful questioners. Such actions have sparked outrage and prompted calls for electoral fairness and respect for constitutional rights.

Denouncing these tactics, the BKU reiterated its commitment to peaceful engagement and called upon the Election Commission to facilitate open dialogue between candidates and voters. The delegation cautioned against violations of citizens’ rights and held the government and law enforcement agencies accountable for any transgressions of democratic principles.
With Punjab set to vote for all 13 MPs in the seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 on June 1, the BKU’s memorandum serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding democratic values and ensuring a fair electoral process. Results will be announced nationwide on June 4.
