The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal of not formally vacating the official CM bungalow at 6 Flagstaff Road, Delhi. This claim comes as Delhi’s new chief minister, Atishi, moves into the residence vacated by her predecessor. According to BJP Delhi chief Virendra Sachdeva, despite leaving the bungalow, Kejriwal retains possession of the property.
On October 4, Kejriwal was seen publicly leaving the bungalow after staying there for 10 years as Delhi’s CM. However, BJP claims that this was merely a public display. “Kejriwal’s dramatic exit with his parents was staged for sympathy, and the keys were handed over just for the cameras,” Sachdeva said, adding that moments later, the keys were taken back by Kejriwal’s office.
The BJP has labeled the bungalow as ‘Sheesh Mahal’ and has previously campaigned against alleged overspending on its reconstruction and interior decorations. BJP claims that the bungalow is not reserved for the CM and is part of a common pool owned by the Public Works Department (PWD). A vigilance department investigation is ongoing into the expenses related to the property.
According to BJP, Atishi’s quick request for the same bungalow has raised concerns. Sachdeva questioned what Atishi may be trying to conceal by occupying the bungalow so soon. He further stated that the people of Delhi are surprised by the back-and-forth over the keys and wonder if something significant is being hidden inside the ‘Sheesh Mahal.’
BJP also raised concerns that proper protocols were not followed during the vacating process. They claimed that no inventory or videography of the bungalow’s condition was done, as is standard when vacating a government property. The political friction continues as the people of Delhi await further developments in this controversy.
