The Congress party’s adoption of Hanuman devotion has unsettled the BJP, following its successful implementation in Karnataka. The BJP has responded by shifting its focus to religious conversion, altering its political strategy ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
The influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s utilisation of Lord Hanuman to counter the Bajrang Dal during the Karnataka elections has prompted the Congress to adopt a similar approach. In Madhya Pradesh, the Congress, led by Kamal Nath, has embarked on a new path by showcasing devotion to Hanuman, in a bid to challenge the BJP on their stronghold of the Ram Temple and religious agendas. Notably, Kamal Nath has erected a grand statue of Hanuman in Chhindwara, leaving no doubt about his commitment as a devoted follower.
The Congress’s efforts to counter the BJP’s religious agenda were evident during the recent election campaign kickoff on June 12 in Jabalpur, where Congress’ National General Secretary, Priyanka Gandhi, made her presence felt. The venue was adorned with Hanuman’s mace and posters of Kamal Nath and Priyanka Gandhi. Upon her arrival in Jabalpur, Priyanka Gandhi proceeded to the banks of the Narmada River at Gwari Ghat, where she performed Vedic rituals, paid homage to the river, and addressed the gathering. Responding to these events, Home Minister Narottam Mishra emphasised that Priyanka Gandhi identifies as a Hindu during the election season, a fact widely acknowledged. Notably, the Congress witnessed limited success in Uttar Pradesh five years ago when Priyanka Gandhi took a dip in the Ganga River. The party now hopes to replicate the spiritual connection in Madhya Pradesh, particularly in Jabalpur known for its religious significance.
The Congress’s saffronisation efforts extend beyond these instances. On April 2, a dialogue with priests was held at the Pradesh Congress office, which was adorned entirely in saffron colour. During the event, former Chief Minister Kamal Nath questioned whether the BJP had monopolised saffron symbolism, wondering why BJP members feel discomfort when Congress leaders express their religious sentiments. Nath emphasised that religion is intertwined with personal emotions, rather than political theatrics. The Congress is also organising recitations of the Hanuman Chalisa in every assembly constituency, aiming to establish itself as the foremost devotee of Lord Hanuman. The Congress’s social media wing has released videos showcasing the arrival of Lord Hanuman, in conjunction with the efforts of Kamal Nath’s government in Madhya Pradesh. These videos are being shared widely, especially in rural areas, to spread the message of Congress’s association with Hanuman and garner support among voters. Responding to BJP’s criticism of the Congress’s religious pursuits, former Union Minister and ex-state Congress President Arun Yadav emphasised that the BJP does not hold a monopoly on religion, as people from all walks of life worship different deities. Yadav called for an end to the politicisation of religion. While the BJP attempted to employ divide-and-rule tactics in Karnataka, their efforts proved unsuccessful, as Hanuman’s flag was raised in Karnataka and is set to be raised in Madhya Pradesh as well.
