Experiencing surge pricing for cabs and autos is pretty common, especially when you do not own a personal vehicle in the city. Demand fares are common in Bengaluru, and some demand a fare more than what they would have charged under normal conditions. But one post on Reddit brings out something different altogether, reminding us all that not all auto or cab drivers are money mongers.

This is one such story that stands out among a flurry of viral social media posts showcasing arrogant auto drivers in Bengaluru. It comes as a timely reminder that these instances don’t define the entire community of drivers.

Incident Details

A user narrated their experience on Reddit about how an auto driver stopped them from paying twice, even though they had forgotten about their earlier payment during the ride.

The user said the payment was done earlier when the auto stopped at a CNG pump for refueling. On reaching home, the passenger absent-mindedly began scanning the driver’s QR code for another payment. Noticing this, the driver immediately reminded the user of the earlier transaction.

“So on the ride, he stopped at a CNG pump to fuel up equivalent to the fare and asked me to pay for it. I didn’t mind, wasn’t the first time this happened anyways so I did. Once I got home, I mindlessly started scanning his payment QR when he asked me to stop, and reminded me that I already did,” the post read.

The user acknowledged that even though the incident seems minor, it was worth sharing amidst the negativity often surrounding such experiences. “I know it isn’t much, I wouldn’t even have ever realised that I paid him twice. But I thought I should share this here, since it could be a fresh change of pace from all the other incidents we read about,” they added.

Social Media Reactions

The post got many tributes to the driver’s integrity as others shared similar incidents.

One user commented, “There are genuinely nice auto drivers in Bengaluru too, let’s not forget that. I’ve had bad experiences only around 1/20 times. I’ve hired taxis/autos, most of them are just doing their jobs and don’t want to mess around. The bad apples are isolated to a few, let’s not judge all of them basis this. *Disclaimer: I’m neither an auto driver nor a union leader.”

Another simply commented, “Rare cases!”

A social media user asked the other, “Please tell me you tipped him?” To which the latter clarified that they tried to tip the driver, but he declined saying that he didn’t want extra money.

Social Media User Relates Similar Experience

This event inspired others to report their good experiences. One Redditor wrote that his phone was misplaced in a car. As his phone was silent, the owner answered all calls made from Find My Phone application.

The commenter said, “The driver took the call and assured me to return the phone on next day. But I was sceptical, then the next day the driver anna came to my home to return the phone and he denied to take money even for petrol charges. After lot of hesitance, he agreed to take the money. Till date, I have respect for that person.”

While the negative stories about auto and cab drivers usually hog the limelight, such stories of good heart bring out the honesty and kindness in the community. Not all drivers are after your money, and this act of integrity deserves appreciation.
