The BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) interviewed former India opener and Kolkata Knight Riders’ mentor Gautam Gambhir on Tuesday for the position of head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. The current head coach, Rahul Dravid, is nearing the end of his tenure following the ongoing T20 World Cup.

“Yes, Gambhir appeared for the interview with the CAC. One round of discussions happened today. There is another round expected tomorrow,” a BCCI source informed PTI about the Zoom call meeting between Gambhir and CAC chairman Ashok Malhotra.

Details of the interaction between Gambhir, Malhotra, and the other CAC members, Jatin Paranjpe and Sulakshana Naik, remain undisclosed. Gambhir is anticipated to be the sole candidate for the position, with the announcement of his appointment expected within the next two days.

An Apex Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening, during which secretary Jay Shah will brief members on the coach selection process before the official announcement.

Discussions reportedly focused on Gambhir’s vision for the next three years, which will include managing three ICC tournaments across various formats. The CAC is also conducting interviews for the North Zone selector’s position.

The Indian team is currently in Barbados for the Super 8 matches, having remained undefeated in the group league stage. They are set to face Afghanistan on June 20.

Gambhir emerged as the frontrunner for the India coach’s role following KKR’s third IPL title triumph under his mentorship. He captained KKR in 2012 and 2014 and served as the team’s mentor for the 2024 season.
