Inspired by the Prime Minister, Modi’s Digital India campaign, a few B.tech girl students studying at the Madan Mohan Malviya Engineering College, Gorakhpur have designed a smart stick for the benefit of the visually impaired. These smart sticks which are named as the “Shiva Stick,” have been designed to enable visually impaired persons to visit religious places of their choice without asking anyone’s help.

The students revealed that stick comes with an in-built sensor and a voice recording chip that enables the visually impaired persons to commute on their own without any fear of being knocked down. After turning on the switch attached to it, the stick will guide the person holding it till they reaches their desired location.

Elaborating how a person can use the stick, the girls said that a person using it can pick a particular destination from a list of religious places that are pre-set in the device, just by pressing the switch button multiple times.

“We designed this device to reduce the dependence of visually impaired persons on others when it comes to commuting and enable them to travel to any religious place of their choice,” one of the students added.
